04-13-07 The 2007 convention of the
Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society will be held June 21-24, 2007,
in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This is also the year of the State of Oklahoma's
Centennial celebration! There will be many events happening around the State so
plan on coming early and staying late. The convention will be held at
the new The Sheraton Midwest City
Hotel at the Reed Conference Center, 5750 Will Rogers road, Midwest City,
OK, 73110, 405.455.1800. The hotel is located 15 minutes from the Santa Fe/Amtrak
depot and the Brick town entertainment
district and a 30-minute drive from the Will Rogers World Airport. The hotel
convention rate is $89.00 per night plus applicable room taxes. Each room has
wireless high-speed Internet access available, coffee maker, and flat screen television.
There is also an indoor pool, fitness center and restaurant located in the hotel.
For those who are storm sensitive, the 6000 sq ft exhibit hall is also a certified
storm shelter. As an incentive, the first 70 hotel registrations will receive
a signed and numbered print of the historic Norman, Oklahoma, Santa Fe depot.
The Sheraton has now sold out. Three other Hotels are located
just across the parking lot and their prices are the same as or slightly less
than the rate for the Convention Hotel. They are: - Holiday Inn Express,
1700 S. Sooner Rd., Midwest City, OK 1-877-611-HOLI for reservations
- Hampton
Inn, 1833 Center Drive, Midwest City, OK 1-405-732-5500 for reservations
- Comfort
Inn, 5653 Tinker Diagonal, Midwest City, Ok 1-800-739-1399 for reservations
The registration fee for the convention will be $130.00, which
includes the Thursday night welcome dinner, tour of the Oklahoma
Railway Museum, Saturday night banquet, Sunday's breakfast, a patch and pin,
along with access to all of the clinics, contest, and vendors area. A single
day registration is $40. It does not include any meals or tours. We
have an extra fare trip planned for Thursday, June 21. This trip
will leave the convention hotel at 7:30 for the Santa Fe depot. We will depart
from the depot at 8:25 on Amtrak's Heartland
Flyer and detrain in Ardmore at 10:20. The ride will give a spectacular view
of the Big Canyon area on the Washita River in the Arbuckle Mountains. In Ardmore
there will be time to photograph the unique Santa
Fe depot prior to boarding the buses to begin the return trip tour. We will
be stopping at two (hopefully three) Santa Fe steam locomotives and visit museums
located in two restored Santa Fe depots. The drive back will follow the tracks
along Highway 77 with possible stops to photograph trains. A box lunch will be
provided to those on the tour. This tour will be limited to the first paid 140
extra fare registrants. Sorry, but this trip is SOLD OUT. For
those unable to take the extra fare train tour, there will be a self-guided
tour of Curtis Hill on the busy BNSF, former Santa Fe, transcontinental
mainline. You can also visit the restored Harvey
House, depot, and museum in Waynoka. There is a great restaurant located inside
the Harvey house eating room. Gary Githens will meet all of those interested on
Thursday the 21st at 7:30 a.m., at the Waynoka depot and give out information
as to the best photograph spots and the do's and don'ts. We will have a
welcome dinner at the convention hotel from 5-7 Thursday evening for all
registered convention attendees. After dinner, the Oklahoma
Railway Museum will be open for all to visit and take a short ride on the
excursion train. The museum has several pieces of Santa Fe equipment that will
be displayed for photography. We plan on having an evening program at the convention
hotel after our return from the museum. Friday June 22nd and Saturday
June 23rd activities will be in the Reed
Center attached to the hotel. We have eight incredible clinics
planned for your enjoyment in the upstairs meeting rooms and 6000 sq ft available
for vendors* located on the lower floor. We will also have a large area
for contest entries so dust off your models and print those pictures! Saturday
night will be the banquet and presentation of awards to the contest winners.
Ken Fitzgerald will make a presentation on the Santa Fe in southern Oklahoma.
Family members are welcome if a banquet ticket(s) is purchased on the registration
form. Sunday June 24 will conclude the 2007 convention. We will have
a breakfast for all registrants followed with the annual Society business meeting
and presentation for the 2008 convention in Riverside, California. There will
be several model layouts to tour on your way home. *The vendors
area will be available for set up on Thursday the 21st and will not be required
to breakdown until Sunday the 24th. Contact
